Honda Motorcycles Latest News And Images

Honda produced more than 18 million motorcycles and ATVs in 2010. The Japanese giant released its global production and sales data for the past calendar year, with record-breaking numbers in many categories. Fueling the numbers were increases in the high-volume Asian market. Honda’s North American sales, which include the U.S., Canada and Mexico, decreased from 210,000 to 192,000, a decline of 8.6%.

Honda expects to sell 220 000 of its new little Twister annually.
Honda sales in Asia have fueled a record-setting production pace for the Japanese manufacturer, with more than 18 million motorcycles and ATVs produced in 2010
Honda’s Asia and Oceania market showed the most dramatic growth in terms of unit volume, with a remarkable 2.7 million unit increase in annual sales. The 14.4 million total for 2010 sets a new record for Honda, replacing last year’s 11.7 million mark, itself a record-setting total at the time. The Asia/Oceania region includes high-volume countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as India, the second-largest motorcycle market on earth.

At the end of 2010 Honda reshaped its strategic presence in India when it confirmed a split with its joint venture Hero Honda. The Japanese firm will divest its 26% share in the JV, which since its creation in 1984 has blossomed into the largest manufacturer in India, with more than five million Hero Honda sales claimed for 2010. Honda’s wholly-owned subsidiary company, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), has itself grown into a manufacturing powerhouse in the Indian market. HMSI is the fourth-largest OEM on the subcontinent, behind Hero, Bajaj and TVS. Honda’s subsidiary looks to maintain market share amidst the country’s rapid two-wheeled sales growth, with HMSI building another manufacturing plant for 2011 to keep production inline with demand.

As for the largest two-wheeled market in the world, China, Honda saw a slight decrease in sales, with totals dropping from 1,303,000 to 1,285,000. In South America Honda made up the loss, enjoying a robust gain in sales, up 18% to 1,640,000.

Honda’s European and North American markets are characterized by much lower unit volumes of larger-displacement, higher-priced machinery. Honda groups the European market in with the Middle East and Africa. Big Red claims slight decline in sales in those regions, dropping from 261,000 to 258,000. North America remains Honda’s poorest performing market, with motorcycle sales in the U.S. still in the decline for 2010.
Honda Motorcycle plans to triple India sales in 5 years news
04 January 2011

Japanese motorcycle maker Honda Motor Co, which ended a partnership with India's Hero Group, plans to ramp up motorcycle production at its fully-owned Indian unit and triple sales to 5 million units annually in five years.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), the Indian arm of Honda Motor Co, has reported a 20 per cent year-on-year growth in sales, at 1,40,642 units in December 2010 compared to the same month of the previous year.

Honda sold 53,821 motorcycles and 76,263 scooters in India in December while it exported 10,558 units during the month.

Honda, which last month sold its stake in Hero Honda Motorcycles to partner Hero Group, hopes to boost local production to offset its comparatively low market share. (See: Hero, Honda split; seal new licensing deal)

Honda plans to boost production at its subsidiary Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd from the current 1.55 million units a year to 2.2 million units by 2012, Japanese business daily Nikkei reported.

Honda is planning overall investment of Rs1,000 crore (18 billion yen) in India to boost two-wheeler production, the newspaper said.

As part of its sales promotion drive, Honda Motor Co plans to begin production on a 250cc sports model in India in March.

The company also plans to build a third plant in Andhra Pradesh and open new sales locations in regional cities and rural districts, the paper added.

EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show To Feature Custom City

The 68th (EICMA) Milan Motorcycle Show, Nov. 2 to 7 will feature the unveiling of the new Ducati 1200 super street model, “Diavel” and eight new models by Honda. It will also feature a new Custom City,  dedicated entirely to custom bikes.

Hosted in the trade fair district of Fiera Milano Rhò in Milan, Italy, the EICMA draws 400,000 to 500,000 visitors. It is the largest bike show in the world.

More than 2,300 journalists from 31 countries attended the 2009 EICMA.

CUSTOM CITY is being introduced at the 2010 Milan Motorcycle Show as a “show within the show”, in the same way that “Green Planet” was introduced last year for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The idea matured thanks to the insistence of motorbike companies, manufacturers and enthusiasts, but finds its rational justification in numbers: against current downhill market trends, the share of vehicles dedicated to custom and touring bikes has slowly grown to represent 17.5% of the sales market.

CUSTOM CITY will be set up in Hall 2 of Fiera Milano, in collaboration with Terre di Moto srl, which will notably be putting on a show, and is fully sponsored by Biker's Life Motorcycle Magazine.

Biker's Life also supports the Italian Padova Bike Expo, and flies the top three winners and their bikes to compete each year at the Rat's Hole Custom Bike Show during Daytona Bikeweek. Bike builders from all over eastern and western Europe compete in the Padova Show in January for a large purse and prizes that include flights to compete in March during the Daytona Bikeweek rally that draws half a million bike enthusiasts worldwide.

So it will be interesting to see what may develop from this sponsorship.

The opening trade-show days (for press and industry) are Nov. 2 & 3, 2010.

EICMA will be open to the public Nov. 4 to 7 with opening hours from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., every day except Friday, when the show stays open until 10.00 p.m.  Ticket and tavel info:  eicma.it/moto

In recent years, MotoLive has been introduced and has become a "must see" event at the massive expo. In the brand new American Pavilion, seven new electric models by Brammo will be presented. The Scootergirls from Los Angeles made their fashion debut last year in the city known for fashion and they will be back to preview a colletion for men. The company speciaizes in protetive motorcycle garments with high fashion appeal.

UPDATE: Here's footage of the 2011 Ducati Diavel super street bike unveiled at the EICMA Show. In some ways, the stripped-down machine recalls the original Ducati Monster 900, a lightweight bike, elegant in its simplicity, that essentially saved the company nearly two decades ago.

The Diavel features a superbike-derived Testastretta 11° engine and 456lb of authentic Ducati performance, including ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Riding Modes.

The new motorcycle is sure to excite longtime Ducati fans, especially those who long for the form-follows-function approach the company took to bike design in the 1970s and 1980s. Unlike many bikes nowadays, the Diavel looks more like a horse and less like a two-wheeled car, but it is also loaded with modern performance and safety features.

Its name comes from the “Devil” in Bolognese dialect, and is pronounced dee-AH-vel. The company says when an early prototype was assembled and shown to group of Ducati engineers and technicians, one person said: “Ignurànt comm’ al diavel!” that’s Bolognese for, “Evil, like the devil!”

While it has some of the dirt-tracker looks of a Harley-Davidson XR1200, it also resembles the recent wave of high-tech musclebikes from the Yamaha V-Rod and the BMW K 1200 R. The new Ducati, which is scheduled to go on sale in late winter or early spring of 2011, uses the same Testastretta engine used in the company’s top-of-the-line superbikes. The Diavel will also offer anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronically adjustable riding modes aimed at increasing safety and comfort.

Harley Davidson will present the new SuperLow, together with four new CVO models.

Yamaha will present an electric scooter, a city mobility prototype.

Italian visitors will also have the opportunity to view the new ZX-10R, the Z750R by Kawasaki due to be launched on the market at the same time. KTM will present the Duke 125 in its naked version. Aprilia presents two 4-cylinder models: Tuono 1000 and RSV4 with traction and wheelie control, as well as the Dorsoduro 1200. And BMW presents two Touring motorcycles: a 6-cylinder K 1600 GT and K 1600 GLT.

At Triumph all eyes will be on the official presentation of the new Tiger 800 enduro with 3-cylinder engine. Piaggio presents a comeback of the Vespa Classica (the PX 125 with handlebar gear lever) and the Piaggio Typhoon.

The novelty at Moto Guzzi will be the V7 Racer. And the helmet manufacturer, Kali, will be presenting its ROAD Line series for the first time ever.

Ride for Kids Supported by Honda and BMW Raises $4.4 Million - 2010 Nationwide Calendar Announced

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s  Ride for Kids® program raised $4.4 million in 2009, thanks to Honda and BMW dealership fundraisers, and motorcyclists who participated in rides across the USA.

The PBTF is the official charity of the Honda Riders Club of America (HRCA), which has been the presenting sponsor of Ride for Kids® since 1991. Thanks to the significant support of American Honda Motor Company's motorcycle division, Honda dealers and other motorcycle industry companies, the program has raised millions of dollars for pediatric brain tumor research.

Cycle World Magazine and the Cycle World International Motorcycle Shows are also major supporters of the Ride for Kids®.

The 2010 National Ride for Kids® season kicked off with a Valentine's Day ride in South Florida. Three new events were added in 2009 and a new ride in Tulsa, Oklahoma is on the  Ride for Kids 2010 Calendar

“Motorcyclists are known for digging deep when it comes to helping kids, and they worked harder than ever to raise funds last year,” said Kyle Clack, national director of the Ride for Kids® program. “We’re confident that their dedication and hard work will pay off for the kids again in 2010.”

Top fundraisers for 2009 - Some familiar names again led the fundraising pack in 2009. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) salutes these hardworking contributors:
  • The customers of Nielsen Enterprises, a Honda dealer in Lake Villa, Ill., have consistently helped the dealership take the top motorcycle business spot for several years. They gave $126,857 to the PBTF at the 2009 Chicagoland Ride for Kids®.
  • The nation’s leading fundraising motorcycle club or chapter is also from the Chicagoland area. Wings Over the Prairie organized a gala silent auction that brought in $70,136 in donations.
  • Bob Henig of Jessup, Md., owner of Bob’s BMW, ran a second successful Ultimate Bike Raffle to benefit the PBTF. He personally raised $59,012 for the Baltimore-Washington Ride for Kids®.
