Buffalo Chip Announces Biker Belles Celebration at 71st Sturgis

The Legendary Buffalo Chip will host the first annual Biker Belles (TM) celebration during the 71st Sturgis Rally. The event on Wednesday, Aug. 10th will "recognize the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motorcycling" while also raising funds for two charities, chosen by Helping with Horsepower (TM.) The charities chosen are Abbott House and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

The inaugural Biker Belles™ celebration will begin in the historic town of Deadwood, where the Lodge at Deadwood will roll out the red carpet and host a special welcome reception complete with events, entertainment and activities catered to women. A women's-only ride to The Buffalo Chip for a concert and party will be led by Meg McDonough, a member of the Motor Maids. 

“Each year the Buffalo Chip sees more and more women riding through our gates”, said Toni Woodruff, daughter of Buffalo Chip president, Rod Woodruff. “It’s so exciting to have an event during the Sturgis Rally that caters to women riders and benefits local charities in the process!”

To highlight the Biker Belles™ festivities at The Chip, 4-time national land speed record holder and pilot of the original “World’s Fastest Bagger,” Laura Klock of Klock Werks Kustom Cycle, will unveil “SALT,” a customized Harley-Davidson® built under her direction and guidance with the girls and young women of the Abbott House. While at the party, Laura and her staff will be selling raffle tickets to win this special bike that will be given away in support of the Abbott House next fall. “We couldn’t be more excited about this inaugural celebration of women in motorcycling in Sturgis.” said Laura Klock. “Whether you’re an avid motorcyclist, a curiosity seeker, or someone looking for a new change of pace, you are welcome to join us! “Biker Belles™ will be a day of real women, real stories and real fun!”

National 2011 Sturgis Road Show Tour Launched at Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex

Dave Perewitz, Eddie Trotta, Cycle Source & Limpnickie Lot have joined the first-ever Sturgis Road Show that is underway this weekend at the Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Hershey-Harrisburg, PA.

Headliner Sturgis bands include: Bachman & Turner, Styx, and Tesla. Michelle Smith has joined the party with Vicious Cycle that is installing parts for Custom Chrome at the Sturgis Roadshow in Pennsylvania.

The Custom Chrome International Bike Show is a featured part of the Sturgis Road Show that is being presented by two Sturgis icons  - The Legendary Buffalo Chip and Loud American Roadhouse, in partnership with promoter Motoring USA and the Eastern Regional Harley-Davidson Dealers Association (EHDDA.)

"Not everyone can make the pilgrimage to South Dakota," said Rod Woodruff, owner of the Legendary Buffalo Chip. "But now they can experience what makes Sturgis the best motorcycle event in the world."

The 2011 Sturgis Road Show will serve up a taste of Sturgis in the Mid-Atlantic region with nightly concerts on "The Legendary Buffalo Chip Main Stage" and food and drink from Main Street Sturgis in the touring Loud American Roadhouse. Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Class of 2011 Announced

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has just announced the list of inductees for 2011, which includes one of the best known riders in motorcycle history: Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community. The lifetime achievement awards will be presented at the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast at 9 a.m., Wednesday, August 10 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, SD.

This year's list (arranged alphabetically) includes:

Don Emde – Don Emde comes by his passion for motorcycling naturally. He was born to a motorcycling family in 1951, and spent much of his youth either working in the family’s dealership or tearing up the tracks of Southern California as an amateur scrambler, dirt tracker and road racer. He turned pro in 1969, and set numerous records with his Daytona 200 win in 1972. Emde and his father became the first (and so far only) father son pair to win the Daytona 200. After his racing career, Don went on to become a successful publisher and author. He currently publishes Drag Specialties Magazine, Parts Magazine and Parts Europe Magazine.

Del Hofer – Del Hofer has been a Harley-Davidson dealer for 50 years, first in Huron, South Dakota, then in Fargo, North Dakota. His love of motorcycling is obvious through many of his activities. Del is active in the American Motorcyclists Association and is the longest serving member of the Harley-Davidson Dealer Advisory Board. A long-time AMA amateur racer in all styles of racing, Del also served as an AMA referee and District Congressman for quite some time. Del’s passion for motorcycling is evident to anyone who meets him. He encourages men and women alike to take safety courses, get active in riding and enjoy it in a safe and fun way.

Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel – Probably one of the best-known motorcycle riders in history, Evel Knievel liked to live on the edge. From riding his bicycle at an early age to pole vaulting when he was in the army to playing semi-pro hockey, Evel tried it all. In the early 1960s, Evel joined the motocross circuit with moderate success until a broken collar bone forced him to take a job as an insurance salesman. The insurance business didn’t hold him for long, though, and soon he moved his family to Washington where he started his first daredevil show. During his career, he attempted 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps, many successfully. In 1974, Knievel was unsuccessful in his attempt to jump across the Snake River on a steam-powered rocket – the Skycycle X-2. Knievel died of pulmonary disease in 2007 at age 69.

Michael Prugh – While Michael Prugh is certainly well recognized as a motorcycle designer and manufacturer, it’s his work educating others that has taken him beyond the title of “builder.” Michael has been involved in many builds for charity and as a competitor. He took second place two years in a row in the AMD’s World Championship of Custom Bike Building and has been featured in numerous publications featuring various builds. In 2010, Prugh led a team of students from Western Dakota Tech to build “Method” a true “one off” bike that was auctioned at the annual Legends Ride. This year, Prugh is again teaming up with Western Dakota Tech, Black Hills Harley-Davidson and the Buffalo Chip to build a bike for the Legends Ride.

Gloria Tramontin Struck – You’d never believe this outspoken 85-year-old woman is the same girl who in 1941 at age 16 tearfully told her brother “I do not want to know how to ride!” Well, her brother won that argument and she’s been riding from that day until today. She’s owned 14 motorcycles in her lifetime, has traveled every state in the continental U.S. as well as Canada. At the age of 76, she took two trips to Europe, traveling a total of over 6,500 miles in 8 countries. Gloria has been a Motor Maid for 65 years, having joined in 1946 and is the longest member still riding. She continually encourages women to ride and to be involved. Gloria is an inspiration to riders and non-riders alike.

Mike & Margaret Wilson – While both Mike & Margaret Wilson have contributed individually to the sport and lifestyle of motorcycling, those who know this couple consider them to be a pair. Mike was an expert dirt-track and TT racer both before and after his stint in World War II. Right after his return, Mike bought a 45 cubic inch Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a birthday surprise for Margaret. Mike and Margaret were business partners in a Harley-Davidson then Honda dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over 25 years. Both Mike and Margaret have been avid riders and have spent countless hours encouraging others to ride, too. Known to an entire generation of women raiders, Margaret is a golden life member of the Motor Maids celebrating 60 years this year. Mike and Margaret both serve on the Board of Directors of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum and continue to work to preserve the heritage of motorcycling through their involvement.

The History And Future Of Tattoos

MANIA drew capacity crowds every day at Broken Spoke Campground during the 70th Anniversary of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally - Aug. 7 to 15 in Sturgis, South Dakota.

VIKINGS
It is very likely that the vikings were tattooed. An Arabic scribe in the year 1100 reported meeting some Vikings he thought were "very rude, dirty - and covered with pictures."

SAILORS
Sailors on their ships returned home with their own tattoos, usually very basic designs of flowers, hearts, mermaids, ships, anchors, snakes, birds, and names. They also had tattoos to mark their voyage around the Horn of Africa, considered a life challenge.

CRIMINALITY

Tattoos did not enter the mainstream of society in most areas of the world until recently, within the last 50 years. For a long time, tattoos were popular only among sailors and criminals. In prison, tattoos - professionally done and homemade - embody what the prisoner is missing: Autonomy and Identity. In many prisons, any new tattoos are strictly forbidden. 

THE ULTIMATE SYMBOL - Tattoos are the ultimate symbol of gang members, a permanent mark that shows total commitment to the gang. The tattoos reveal lots of things: who you are, what gang you're in, your beliefs (racist, etc.), what you have done, where you have been, how many years you have been in jail and even the fact that you have killed. Teardrops under the eye as well as spider webs on the elbows are known to symbolize people killed. 

Somewhere between outlaw and mainstream, tattoos became a major symbol of the life-style enjoyed by bikers. The iron horse riders, like the American Indians began expressing what was on their heart and in their souls through the tattoos on their bodies. Brotherhood, Freedom, Hero, Nature, Rebel, Soldier, Warrior.  - Such as this tattoo underway by Albertino Feghaly.

Modern day cartoons often pay tribute to their origins in the world of tattoo designs and drawings. Cartoon characters are also in popular demand as tattoos - such as this Spiderman tat by world famous Gill "The Drill" Montie.

Tattoos obviously influence motorcycle paint wraps - and vice versa.

THE GRAND DADDY OF RALLIES IS ALIVE AND WELL. The annual Sturgis rally promised to be big and it exceeded expectation. Estimates put attendance at 600,000 and from what we experienced that was accurate. The weather was great and the vendors were busy. This might not be an indicator of an economic recovery but it’s for sure that bikers are sick of sitting home and being afraid to enjoy the life style we all love. It’s never been about money. Enough bad news from CNN all you need is some gas and a tent. The bars, restaurants, hotels, campgrounds and concerts were all rockin.

Kid Rock, Bob Dylan , ZZ Topp, Ozzy Osbourne, STP and Guns and Roses jammed their greatest hits to crowds in excess of 20,000, at several points in the show everybody fired up their bikes at once… Ahh that sweet sound mixed with smell of gasoline and smoke from campfires, the perfect combination’

The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse was located at the Legendary Buffalo Chip and the party never stopped, The Chip, as it is affectionately referred to, is the essence of Sturgis itself, camping, bars, concerts, food, girls, vendors etc., encompasses the true biker life style. Hat’s off to Rod “Woody” Woodruff and his daughter Toni for making it the place to be! We were so blown away by this venue that we signed a five-year deal to appear there.


Many people cannot afford to attend multiple rallies, so if you can only get to one a year make it Sturgis. Oh yeah and the riding is as good as it gets with, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, Custer State Park and more are only a few hours away.

Three Legendary Master Bike Builders Join IMBBA Hall of Fame

Three legendary master bike builders joined the International Master Bike Builders' Hall of Fame at the 70th Anniversary of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally:   Master Bike Builders Ron Finch, Bob McKay & Mondo Porras.

The stage was filled with master bike builders and icons from the motorcycle industry, who enjoyed a night of camaraderie in front of a packed crowd of supporters, Sunday night, Aug. 8, 2010 at Broken Spoke Campground, 79 North, Sturgis, SD.

Jay Allen and Radical Randy of Broken Spoke were on stage when fellow hall of fame bike builder, Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation upstaged Ron Finch with an impersonation of "Ron Finch."

Denver's Godfather of Choppers, Mondo Porras received numerous rounds of applause from a huge crowd of supporters in the audience.

"The IMBBA is proud to welcome Master Bike Builders Mondo Porras, Bob McKay and Ron Finch into the IMBBA "Hall of Fame," said Jeff Starke, founding president of the International Master Bike Builders Association. "Their lifetime achievements are in keeping with IMBBA high standards and it is with great pleasure that we present our highest achievement award for excellence and charitable contributions to these world renowned builders".

The IMBBA HALL OF FAME awards presented to Ron Finch, Mondo Porras and Bob McKay by the International Master Bike Builders Association salute dedication to the bike industry and decades of accomplishment. The IMBBA also presented Master Bike Builder awards during the ceremony to Donald Bitman, Steven Broyles Sr., Jim Nasi, Kyle Robinson, and Lee Wimmer. These awards symbolize their certification as experienced, skilled MASTER BIKE BUILDERS.

Ron Finch, Mondo Porras and Bob McKay join other legendary bike builders in the IMBBA HALL OF FAME that includes Arlen Ness and Indian Larry, Donnie Smith and Dave Perewitz, along with Fred Kodlin and Paul Yaffe. More than 200 bike builders and their guests attended a VIP dinner following the ceremony at Broken Spoke Campground.

The International Master Bike Builders presented three big events at the Sturgis 70th Rally - The IMBBA Bike Show and Hall of Fame Ceremony at Broken Spoke Campground. And a one day bike build by Athena "Chickie" Ransom with three high school bike builders from programs supported by the IMBBA that was staged at the Broken Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street in downtown, Sturgis

"Gypsy Pashn" 4 Days On the Road To Sturgis

After (4) four 500-mile days on the road to Sturgis, "Gypsy Pashn," Betsy E. Lister just arrived - Sunday, Aug. 8th 2010. The ride was "long, hot, and I'm whooped!" she said. But as soon as the rain lets up, she intends to hook up with friends and go sight seeing, and ride out to the (IMBBA) International Master Bike Builders' Bike Show and Hall of Fame Ceremony at Broken Spoke Campground.

She is being honored for 20 years of dedication to the motorcycle industry at this year's Sturgis Hall of Fame Breakfast - 9 a.m. Wednesday, August 11th. She is the founder of two websites - gypsypashn.com and bikerbits.info plus three bike insurance websites. She has personally ridden more than 100,000 miles on rides, fundraisers etc. She is an advocate of bikers rights and a champion of biker causes.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally - August 9-15, 2010

Each year, hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists head toward what many feel is the motorcycling mecca of the world, Sturgis, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota takes place this year August 9-15.

Sturgis Painting by David Uhl Celebrates 70th Anniversary

The Legends Gallery at Broken Spoke Campground will host a reception at 8 p.m. Aug. 7th for motorcycle artist David Uhl to kick off the  70th Anniversary of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The reception is free and open to the public to attend.

David Uhl will be presenting his Sturgis Commemorative Collection of fine art prints, including “70 & Counting” – his newest piece commemorating the 70th Sturgis rally. The exhibit will also feature “Stella” and “Evelyn”, which are the two last pieces in the Women of Harley-Davidson Collection.

David Uhl was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 20, 1961. Early on, David began creating amazing drawings and, by high school’s end, had decided to pursue a career in art. He applied for, and won, the only full-ride scholarship to the Colorado Institute of Art offered to a high school senior in the U.S. He was dissatisfied with the design programs the school offered, yet he excelled at the life drawing and illustration classes. Leaving school after one year, he focused his talents on commercial illustration, eventually forming Uhl Illustration, an award-winning firm servicing many prominent clients such as FedEx, IBM, Coca-Cola and Time magazine.

Acquiring a motorcycle in 1988 and riding to Sturgis, South Dakota, David saw first hand the culture of cycling enthusiasts. He entered the world of Harley-Davidson® apparel (t-shirt designs) with great success. Yet, after a time, David felt there was something missing, artistically.

In the beginning of 1996, after 20 years of producing drawings for commercial clients, David entered the world of oil painting. This radically changed everything. Developing his own unique style, he focused his attention around the turn of the century. In 1998 David conceived of a brand new, yet timeless avenue for Harley-Davidson art; museum quality oil paintings. Harley-Davidson, exhibiting nearly a century of history at the time, was the perfect match. David researched motorcycle imagery from the 1930s and ‘40s. This led to his first work; A Change in the Weather. He flew to Milwaukee to present the painting to Harley-Davidson executives. Over a hundred paintings later David feels he is still in the infancy of his painting career.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME 2010 INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame inductees for 2010. The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community.

Nancy Davidson – Nancy Davidson, wife of Willie G. Davidson, is recognized throughout the motorcycling community as a passionate and devoted ambassador for the sport of motorcycling. While she doesn’t ride her own motorcycle, she’s been an inspiration to her children (Bill, Karen and Michael Davidson) and countless women riders as she shared her passion and support for the sport of motorcycling. Nancy Davidson has attended numerous motorcycling events, including some 30 Sturgis Motorcycle Rallies – most times riding to the event from Milwaukee with her husband.

Betsy E. Lister – Betsy Lister has been working to keep bikers informed for over twenty years. She is the founder of two websites - gypsypashn.com and bikerbits.info – that give bikers from all over the country information about rides, rallies, vendor opportunities, biker rights and more. She also operates a third website providing bikers with lessons on insurance coverage. Over the years she has volunteered numerous hours to raising awareness for motorcycle safety and motorcycle insurance issues. While logging over 100,000 motorcycle miles, Betsy has founded organizations and rides to raise funds for a variety of charities. She is also the biker poet laureate for both Massachusetts and New Hampshire for Roadpoet eMagazine.

Ronald McKinley – Ron McKinley spent 20 years as a South Dakota Highway Patrolman – 5 of those years as a motorcycle trooper. Both during his time as a trooper and since his retirement in 1991, Ron has dedicated himself to motorcycle safety through talks, seminars and safe riding courses. He is a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor, serves as the safety officer for four Harley Owners Group chapters, teaches Riders Edge safety courses, writes a monthly safety newsletter for 18 groups, has served as a Volunteer State Safety Coordinator for Harley-Davidson Motor Company and teaches for the Harley Owners Group Primary Officer Training.

Roger Schieman, Founders Award – Roger Schieman has spent countless hours keeping alive the history of motorcycling and the history of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Roger has been a member of the AMA and as a Jackpine Gypsy for 20 years was instrumental in the operation of races in Sturgis throughout the year, but especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Roger was a founding partner and board member of both motorcycle museums in Sturgis, and still volunteers his time to help make the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame a place where the history of motorcycling and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally can be shared with visitors from all over the world.

Stan Simpson – Stan Simpson’s involvement with motorcycles spans 60 years. From his first Indian Scout ride in 1949 to his present day work improving the direction of the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA), Stan has been a force in the motorcycle industry. Stan is one of a rare breed that is fully involved with both on-road and off-road motorcycling. He won his first AMA race in 1957, was a local motocross champion, won a national enduro and was involved in numerous International Six Day Trials (ISDT) teams. Today, Stan serves as Chairman of the Board of the AMA, is working tirelessly to expand and improve the motorcycling lifestyle and tries to ride at least 20,000 miles a year on-road and 10,000 miles a year off-road.

“Kiwi” Mike Tomas – “Kiwi” Mike Tomas is founder of Kiwi Indian Motorcycle Company and is widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable experts on classic Indian Motorcycles in the world. Kiwi Indian Motorcycle manufactures four new updated models of classic styled motorcycles that pay tribute to the classic Indians of years past in addition to over 2,500 different reproduction part numbers. Mike sponsors race teams and even competes in endurance rides to demonstrate the viability of the classic Indian in today’s world.

Ozzy will cap off this year's music at The Buffalo Chip! 

Immediately after the World Famous Rat's Hole Custom Bike Show, Ozzy Osbourne will take the stage to  cap off this year's Biker Music Festival at the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

Ozzy Osbourne, the hipster of dark thoughts and dark music was lead vocalist for the British heavy metal band, Black Sabbath in the '70's before becoming a multi-platinum solo artist.

"The Buffalo Chip is offering more activities, more exhibits and shows than ever before," said Ted, who agreed to bring his big show to the Chip as soon as a large enough paved staging area became available.
