New Jersey - Man pleads guilty to kidnapping Newton man by mistake

One of four Missouri men charged with kidnapping a local pet food store owner last year in a case of mistaken identity signed a guilty plea Wednesday that calls for him to serve 18 years in prison.
Andrew Wadel, 22, made his guilty plea at Sussex County Superior Court in front of the man he kidnapped, Jeffrey Muller, who sat in the back of the courtroom with his wife.
Wadel, handcuffed and wearing an orange Sussex County jail jump suit, told Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti that he used a Taser to stun Muller before the victim was pulled into a car and driven 1,000 miles before escaping his captors in a Missouri convenience store parking lot.
“I was the one who Tased him,” Wadel said when asked to describe his role in the kidnapping.
Three other men face kidnapping charges in the case while a fifth man pleaded guilty late last year to conspiracy charges for his role in funding the kidnapping to recoup money owed from a different Jeffrey Muller. That Jeffrey Muller had been living in another New Jersey county but has since moved to another state, authorities have said.
Wadel, Douglas Stangeland and Lonnie Swarnes, Wadel’s uncle, allegedly kidnapped Muller in front of his Newton pet food store on Jan. 8, 2010 on orders from another man, William Barger, who allegedly told them he was starting a branch of the Hells Angels in Missouri and this would be their ticket into the club.
Roy Slates entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit theft late last year for his role in the kidnapping. Authorities said he was trying to recover $500,000 from a deal that went bad years ago. He was released and went home to Missouri to await sentencing, authorities have said.
Stangeland and Swarnes are incarcerated in the Sussex County while Barger is being held in Morris County jail to keep him apart from the others, said Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Greg Mueller.
Barger allegedly claimed to be the son of Sonny Barger, founder of the Hells Angels’ Oakland chapter. However, Barger and his attorney both told the Daily Record that they never heard of William Barger. The attorney said William Barger’s claims of having a connection to the Hells Angels was false.
Muller and his wife declined to comment. Muller had an arm around his wife’s waist as they walked out of the courtroom following the plea.

Wyoming - Former customers testify prison guard dealt narcotics on multiple occasions

Alleged drug-dealing prison guard Christopher Walsh appeared in court Tuesday and faced two former co-workers who prosecutors say were customers in his drug trafficking operation.
Like he did in grand jury testimony, Joseph Ciampi testified he purchased cocaine from Walsh four times in 2008 and 2009. Ciampi also revealed that Walsh approached him in May 2009, asking him to invest $1,000 to further the operation. Ciampi said he declined.
Walsh and Ciampi are suspended from their jobs at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.
Walsh, 28, a corrections officer, was suspended after he, another corrections officer and two former prison employees were charged March 10 with drug crimes by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office.
Ciampi, 43, a corporal at the prison, was suspended after his name surfaced in unsealed grand jury documents as a purchaser of the cocaine. However, he was not charged with any crimes.
Former corrections officer John Gonda also testified Tuesday that he purchased cocaine from Walsh on three occasions in the fall of 2008.
Prosecutors said none of the drug transactions involving Walsh, Ciampi and Gonda occurred in the prison.
Walsh remains free on bail.
Gonda was fired after his March 2009 arrest in a multimillion-dollar drug bust targeting the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Prosecutors said Gonda became a key witness in the case against Walsh, suspended corrections officer Jason Fierman, former prison nurse Kevin Warman and former prison Capt. John Carey.
Authorities allege Warman, 50, of Edwardsville, used fictitious names or the names of former inmates to obtain prescription pain medication and other controlled substances from pharmacies on behalf of the prison. The drugs were allegedly used by Warman and distributed to other prison employees and corrections officers.
Carey, 37, of Kingston, allegedly received deliveries of cocaine on numerous occasions from other prison employees, particularly Gonda, and former inmates, authorities allege.
Fierman, 35, of Dallas, is accused of taking delivery of, or selling cocaine to, others inside the prison. Additionally, Fierman allegedly sold prescription drugs to inmates he was supervising at the prison, along with other individuals.
Preliminary hearings for Warman, Carey and Fierman are set for April. this is an ongoing investigation," Deputy Attorney General Tim Doherty said. "We're confident about the case and that we will do well in court."

Perris, CA - Outlaw Biker Arrested for Having Drugs, Illegal Weapons

An outlaw biker allegedly running a "chop shop" at his Perris residence, where illegal guns and drugs were stored, was arrested today - - but not before his dog attacked a police dog and was shot and killed, a Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said.
Todd Payne, 36, was taken into custody by members of the county's regional Gang Task Force around 8 a.m. at a house in the 24000 block of El Baquero Road, according to Sgt. Sean Brown.
Brown said Payne, who belongs to an outlaw motorcycle gang, which Brown did not identify, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, stolen firearms and assault rifles.
Payne was also dealing in stolen auto parts at the location, according to Brown.
"A total of 16 firearms were recovered, one of which was reported stolen during a residential burglary in December," Brown said. "Officers also recovered multiple stolen motorcycle parts, meth and gang paraphernalia."
According to Brown, during their raid, a large mixed breed dog on the property attacked a police dog, prompting task force members to shot and kill the aggressive animal.
The police dog was treated by a veterinarian and is doing fine, Brown said. No other injuries were reported.
Payne was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center, but bail information was not immediately available.
