Stark County Sheriff awarded over $60,000 in motorcycle safety grants

The Stark County Sheriff's Office was awarded two grants to promote motorcycle safety and training in Stark County from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
The first award is the 2011 Motorcycle Training Grant for $58,533.49. The Site Coordinator will be Captain Brian Arnold. The grant will be used to fund Motorcycle Ohio's Basic Rider Course between April 1 and Oct. 2, 2011. Information about the training is available online at http://www.motorcycle.ohio.gov/.

The second award is a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Grant in the amount of $3,000. Funds will be used to promote motorcycle safety awareness with both motor vehicle drivers and motorcyclists by using the Ride Smart and Share the Road programs in Stark County communities.
These grants will be beneficial to the county. During the 2010 motorcycle season, there were 10 fatalities in Stark County. Too many of these fatalities involved unendorsed motorcycles -- 60 percent of riders were not wearing motorcycle helmets and 40 percent were alcohol related crashes.
These grants will allow the Sheriff's Office to provide motorcycle training and community education in an effort to reduce the motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities in Stark County.
