Helmet Law Repeal Bill Moves Forward

CARSON CITY – Democrat John Lee broke party ranks, and sided with Republicans to repeal Nevada’s 39-year-old helmet law. The bill won approval on a 4-3 vote in the Senate Transportation Committee.
Senate Bill 177 would allow riders 21 years and older to ride without helmets, as long as they have completed a safety course and have at least a year’s worth of riding experience. Their passengers 21 and over also would not have to wear helmets.
Even if the measure passes the Senate, it faces a huge hurdle in the Assembly, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 26-16.
Republican Sen. Don Gustavson failed in five sessions previously to pass bills to repeal the helmet law. For years, he argued that wearing a helmet should be a matter of personal choice for the rider, despite knowing the potential risk.
According to the Review-Journal, the Senate committee voted to back helmet law repeal, despite pleas by Las Vegas Sen. Mike Schneider, who called SB177 “a jobs creation bill for the medical industry.”
He made the comment after Las Vegas Sen. Elizabeth Halseth called the bill “a good jobs bill, a great pro-business bill, a great pro-liberty bill and a great safety bill.”
Yes, a “safety bill.”

If by that, Sen. Halseth meant Nevada EMTs and emergency room doctors and nurses would be more “safe” in their positions, then she is indeed correct.

Nevada's helmet bill was FINALLY voted on by the Senate Cmte Members. By her inaction and waiting until the absolute last minuted, it appears Senator Breeden REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted this bill to die. Perhaps she didn't want to show her true colors - which is she betrayed us all by VOTING AGAINST SB177. She gave no explanation other than to let Senator Schneider talk about how passing a law like this would fill up our health care facilities with droolers (my word.) The co-sponsor of the Bill, Sen. Manendo also VOTED AGAINST SB177 based on his opinion that the 21 age requirement should be "AT LEAST 25."
Sen. Halseth is the HERO! She is a brand new Senator who held her ground against this very vocal, long-time, politician to confidently oppose Senator Schneider. That took balls!
Now it needs to be voted on by our NV senators. I strongly suggest everyone we know email ALL of our senators, but if you are a NV resident, please find out who YOUR senator is and send them a personalized email. If you are a registered voter make that known. Get your rep's phone # and call them, also!! PLEASE MAKE YOUR EMAILS ARE VERY SHORT AND COURTEOUS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY BUSY AND WON'T READ LONG EMAILS.
