JACKSBORO, Tenn. - Ex-LaFollette officer enters diversion plea on misconduct charges

OFF THE WIRE
JACKSBORO, Tenn. — A former East Tennessee officer will avoid jail time and keep a clean record if he stays out of trouble for the next three years.
Tony Rucker, a former officer with the LaFollette Police Department, appeared in Campbell County Criminal Court this week and entered a pre-trial diversion plea, court papers show.
The Jacksboro, Tenn., man was indicted in December on charges of bribing a witness, filing a false report and official misconduct . Authorities say he accepted money from a criminal defendant in exchange for interfering with his case, causing charges to be dropped.
Pretrial diversion allows the accused to avoid a trial and go on probation without admitting guilt. Under the law, it’s only for first-time law-breakers.
The charges will be expunged from his record if he completes terms of the three-year probationary agreement approved today by Campbell County Criminal Court Judge E. Shayne Sexton.
The agreement also shows Rucker must pay $700 to the Campbell County Children’s Center by May 23. He also has to surrender his Peace Officer Standards and Training certification.
Rucker was a six-year veteran on the LaFollette force until he resigned Dec. 2, a few days before a Campbell County grand jury indicted him.
