PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Rhode Island lawmaker wants to outlaw drunk-driving checkpoints in the state.
Cranston Representative Charlene Lima (D) wants to ban the checkpoints and said they are unfair.
She has introduced a bill that will go before the General Assembly on Wednesday. If the bill goes through, police would be prohibited from conducting sobriety checkpoints to identify drunk drivers.
Lima believes sober drivers shouldn't have to prove to police that they're not driving under the influence.
However, police oppose Lima's potential bill because determining whether someone is driving drunk via the checkpoints is a legitimate method.
The bill goes before the House Judiciary Committee this week for a vote.
